The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
