Cyclone Melissa is projected to escalate to a uncommon category five cyclone as it shifts in the direction of Jamaica, bringing life-threatening rapid inundation and mudslides.

This weather system, which recorded wind speeds of up to 120 mph as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to reach land by midweek, based on data from hurricane specialists.

Alerts of blackouts and structural damage have been released as Melissa produces up to 76cm of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above normal levels. "Seek shelter now," residents have been advised.

The cyclone is the 13th cyclone in the current Atlantic storm period, which typically ends in late autumn.

Highest-Level Storm Threat

A highest-level hurricane is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

While Melissa is expected to weaken to a category four storm before arriving at the island, meteorologists said there was "almost no noticeable change in the general consequences" upon landfall, and that the storm will be "equally strong" when it impacts the island.

Critical Preparations

With tropical storm-level wind and rainfall already expected long before it moves across Jamaica's central region - including potentially the capital, Kingston - warnings state that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"An extended timeframe of damaging winds and heavy rainfall are underway and will cause severe and deadly rapid water accumulation and many rock slides," urged weather authorities.

The country's head of government Andrew Holness said: "I understand that there are countless citizens who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: worry is natural.

"However the optimal approach to address nervousness and any apprehension and worry is to stay ready."

Residents are being told to protect their properties with sand barriers and timber panels, and to accumulate basic necessities.

Broader Consequences

Alerts are also active for areas in Haiti such as the primary urban center, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, where the hurricane is expected to bring comparable impacts by the middle of next week.

Rock slides currently triggered by the cyclone have already killed two in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Expected Path

Melissa is predicted to pass over Cuba by Wednesday before moving through the Antillas Mayores and entering the Atlantic.

By the time it reaches the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have diminished to a Category 3 storm.

Even though it is difficult to link individual weather events to environmental shifts, scientists say it is resulting in meteorological events more common and more intense.
