The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

This event comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
